![]() Relevance is determined by the context of your character, not just possible interest of the reader. ![]() She also includes specific sources for researching various eras/settings and discusses how to choose details from them that are relevant to your story. Along those lines, she talks about some crafty ways to bring real historical figures into your fiction in a believable way. ![]() As with fantasy, you'll need to slip the world-building in unobtrusively. You owe it to your readers to do more than simple window-dressing, but info dumps are going to kill your pacing. ![]() There's a delicate balance between authenticity and accessibility, too. It doesn't matter if a particular word or phrase was really in use - if it doesn't sound like it might have been common in the time period you're writing about, it will pull your reader out of the story. For example, she explores the balance between authenticity and believability. There is a lot of great food for thought, however, on how to approach your research for a historical novel. This was written in 2008 and quite a lot has changed since then, particularly with regard to self-publishing and self-promotion. ![]() I would also suggest skipping almost all the advice on publishing. If you're writing your first novel, I wouldn't recommend this as a resource for learning fundamentals like character development, story structure, etc. ![]()

It tasted about like it looked: a black punch in the nose of bitterness and smoke. It had a few characteristics of actual flavor and was, after all, HOT COFFEE IN A CAN. It was magically both harsh and also bodiless. BOSS BLACK had a lethal looking can with a picture of what looked like Stalin(or possibly Tom Selleck) smoking a pipe on the front. Upon arrival at Tokyo, Narita, I went straight to a vending machine and purchased a hot black coffee in a can, at the urging of fellow travelers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Caine, an obsolete warship converted from a post- World War I-era destroyer. History, of course, informs the daily lives of White children, too, but in a way that means they're ignorant-and are taught ignorance-until they're deemed "ready" for that dark history. ![]() Native children, and children of color, know far more history than one might expect, because history informs and shapes our daily lives, today. I imagine some people defending the book by saying its audience isn't old enough for the complexity of that history, but that holds true only for a selected (possibly white) audience. The story she tells, and the reviews of her story, demonstrate (yet again) an ignorance of history. I think Telgemeier's Ghosts is one of those problematic books, but I don't think that Telgemeier is aware that she's doing that same thing. One example (there are many) is Susan Cooper's Ghost Hawk. Anytime I see a book that has something to do with ghosts, I wonder if the author is going to be contributing to the too-high-pile of problematic books with characters who are haunted or inspired by the ghost of a Native character. ![]() ![]() Genres: Adult, Dark Fantasy, Fantasy Romanceīuy on Amazon | Book Depository | Indiebound | Blackwell's Here’s more about the first book in the series: Note: The cover reveal will be happening on January 3rd, 2022 (Monday) so make sure you are available on that date to participate. The blogging community was completely right for putting this book on everyone’s radar, and credit goes to them for doing so. So when UK Tor acquired Baldree’s book for publication and offered a review copy, I jumped at the chance with some nervousness but also excitement at trying something new. What if it didn’t live up to my expectations? What if I found the pacing too slow and wanted more action scenes, as I am known to do? I’ll admit, whilst I’ve watched tv shows, I’ve never actually read a slice-of-life fantasy before and therefore didn’t know what to expect, yet I was curious. The hype surrounding this book was immense, bloggers were an absolute powerhouse for promoting this book, and in all honesty this intimidated me. Originally self published, Legends and Lattes caused quite a stir upon its initial release. This is a tale so simple yet so wholesome and adorable, it has made me see just how versatile the fantasy genre can be. Legends and Lattes isn’t just a cosy, slice-of-life fantasy, it is a hug after a long day, it’s that first bite of chocolate you’ve been desperately craving or that first sip of coffee, it’s pyjamas and blankets and everything else which brings comfort and warmth. Travis Baldree turns from the man behind audiobook narrations for Forthright books, to writing his very own debut novel, and I’m so glad he did. ![]() ![]() And nowadays, it’s as easy as typing “Make an essay for me” in live chat.
